Father's Day Heineken beer scam as warning issued by company

A scam text promoting a ‘Heineken Beer Father’s Day Contest 2022’ is doing the rounds - and people are being urged not to fall foul to fraudsters' tricks.

The text, which has been circulating on Whatsapp, claims that ‘5,000 coolers full of Heineken beers’ are available to claim.

The message is sent next to an image of a pack of Heineken beers and includes a link to scam website set up to steal your details.

The latest scam echoes a similar fake Heineken contest which circulated online in 2020 - that competition promised people the chance to win "free kegs of Heineken beer".

A spokesperson for Heineken has urged anyone who got the message to "delete it immediately", with the representative telling BBC News: "We're aware of the current phishing scam circulating through social networks, which is not sanctioned by Heineken. We have alerted the relevant authorities."

The beer manufacturer has also revealed that the scam has been reported to Action Fraud.

Which? has shared advice on what to do if you receive a scam text:

If you receive a random text or WhatsApp message from a brand that you discover is fraudulent, open up the WhatsApp chat from the unknown number, open the sender's contact details and select 'Block and Report'. You can report suspicious text messages to 7726, a free spam reporting service, as well as to the company the text was claiming to be from.
