Father of bride faces awkward speech after threatening groom with hammer days before wedding

A bride's father faces an awkward speech after he admitted brandishing a hammer at the groom days before his daughter's wedding.

Paul Bonar was allowed to walk free from court before the wedding this weekend where his victim is set to become his son-in-law.

Solicitor Billy Somerville, defending, told Perth Sheriff Court: "The unidentified male with a dog who was shouting is set to marry Mr Bonar's daughter this Saturday.

"I certainly hope things proceed better then than they did on this particular day."

Bonar, 49, admitted shouting and acting aggressively while brandishing the hammer above his head near his home in Perth on 7 August last year. He also admitted having a weapon.

Fiscal depute Matthew Kerr told the court: "At 1pm a witness heard what they perceived to be a disturbance and that caused them to look out of the window.

"When he did that he saw the accused leave his home address and walk out into the street, pulling at his trousers.

"The accused seemed to remove a hammer from his back right pocket and brandished it above his head. Another witness heard him shouting.

"They saw him with the hammer clearly emerging from his pocket and saw him reaching from it as he approached an unidentified male.

"Police were contacted and very quickly traced the accused at his home address. He was arrested and made no reply to caution and charge."

Sheriff Robert Carr said: "Anyone would have been fearful and alarmed at what happened on that particular day.

"I have considered very carefully what's been said on your behalf. I am satisfied this is serious enough for a community payback order to be imposed as a direct alternative to custody."

Bonar, from Carnegie Place, Perth, was ordered to carry out 135 hours unpaid work in the community.
