Father killed and children injured after grenade explodes in Indiana home

An Indiana man has been killed and his two teenage children injured after a hand grenade exploded in their home.

The father was left fatally injured after the explosion at the home in northwestern Indiana on Saturday evening.

His son, 14, and daughter, 18, were rushed to hospital with shrapnel wounds.

The family was looking through a grandfather’s belongings when they found a hand grenade.

The device exploded when someone reportedly pulled the pin, the sheriff’s department said.

The father was found unresponsive at the scene and later pronounced dead.

Sheriff Oscar Martinez said investigators were trying to determine what caused the grenade to explode in the home about 30 miles southeast of Chicago.

Authorities didn’t immediately release any additional information about the grenade or why the relative had it.
