Father and Son Killed in Freak Golf Course Tragedy – They Were Just Trying to Ride Out the Storm

What was supposed to be a relaxing day out on the golf course turned into an unimaginable nightmare for a father and son in Georgia. Matthew Terrell Collins Sr., 58, and his 29-year-old son Matthew Terrell Collins Jr., a former police officer, were both killed when a tree fell on their golf cart during a sudden storm on April 6.

The pair had been enjoying a round of golf at Bull Creek Golf Course in Midland when the weather started to turn. Like many would in the same situation, they took shelter under a tree, hoping to wait out the worst of it. But in a cruel twist of fate, the tree they’d trusted to protect them collapsed, crushing them underneath, reported the Express.

The storm that took their lives was part of a severe weather system that’s been sweeping through the South and Midwest since early April. Local authorities have reported at least 20 deaths linked to tornadoes and flooding, highlighting just how dangerous the conditions have been.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Collins family with the heartbreaking task of arranging both funerals. The tribute on the fundraiser paints a picture of a close-knit father and son duo who were simply spending some quality time together when disaster struck.

“Matthew Jr. was a loyal friend, a kindhearted soul, and someone who always showed up for the people in his life,” the tribute reads. “He shared a deep bond with his father, and losing both of them so suddenly is a devastating blow to everyone who knew and loved them.”

So far, the community has rallied around the family, donating over $25,000 to support funeral costs. Tabetha Collins, heartbroken but grateful, shared a message of thanks: “Your kindness has been a true blessing during one of the hardest times of our lives. Your generosity lifted a burden we couldn’t have carried alone.”

The loss has been felt deeply in the wider community too. The Columbus Georgia Police Department posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, honouring Matthew Jr.’s service and expressing condolences to the family. “We are heartbroken,” the post read. “Matthew Jr. served our department with pride.”

Even Georgia Governor Brian Kemp spoke out after hearing about the tragedy, asking people to keep the family and emergency responders in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
