Father and son determined to 'reinvent takeaways' open their own venue

A father and son are on a bid to reinvent the beloved takeaway with the launch of their own venue, Gannets.

The new family run business, co-founded and run by Gary and Andrew Tate, had been the pair's dream since Andrew was 14 years old. Now, it's a reality.

Gannets, based on Eastbank Street in Southport, describes itself as "takeaway reinvented" and offers freshly prepared food direct from its swanky new production kitchen. The takeaway opened its doors for the first time on October 10.

The Southport based venture is the brainchild of father and son team Gary and Andrew, with the idea sparked by Andrew when he was still a teenager. The determined and passionate food lover went on to work in multiple Michelin-starred restaurants throughout the UK, before making a return to his hometown to launch Gannets alongside his father, Gary.

Gannets' speciality is ribs, which come in a variety of tantalising flavours, including minted lamb, tomato and mozzarella, and peking. The ribs are accompanied by a decent selection of sides, including Gannets' very own 'onion nest', which is a cluster of fried seasoned onions, and its spin on coleslaw - dubbed 'cornslaw' - which is a twist on the crunchy classic.

Burgers and wraps are also available, alongside a number of vegan and vegetarian dishes to suit the ever expanding range of dietary choices and requirements. Gannets is also introducing the 'Yaffle' dessert, which is a sweet concoction made up of a doughnut-like cup rolled in sugar, and filled with a variety of fillings including chocolate fudge, Biscoff creations and more.

The takeaway, located at 177 Eastbank Street in Southport, has been kitted out with a new high spec kitchen, as part of the family's efforts to cook high quality food at competitive prices.

Commenting on the launch, Andrew Tate said: "It's so exciting to finally see our dream turn into a reality. I couldn't be happier with the menu, which offers something for everyone, all while remaining of top quality.

"It was also really important to us to keep prices down to make our dishes really affordable. A lot of our deals cost under £10 for a full meal."

Gannets opened its doors to the public on Monday, October 10, and is open seven days a week from 4pm until 10.30pm. For further information, click here.
