Father and children survive Alaska plane crash as incredible picture shows them standing on wings in frozen lake

A family-of-three miraculously survived on the wing of a plane for over 12 hours after it crashed into a lake in Alaska.

John Morris, who piloted the aircraft, and his two children, were rescued from the wing of their small Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser on Monday morning.

Incredible aerial photos show the aircraft partially submerged in the frozen Kenai Peninsula Lake.

Good Samaritans spotted the trio who were reportedly on a sightseeing flight which went missing after taking off from Soldotna, Alaska on Sunday.

Terry Godes was just one of 12 pilots who joined the rescue mission to find the trio. He feared the worst but said a prayer on approach to the aircraft.

"It kind of broke my heart to see that, but as I got closer down and lower, I could see that there's three people on top of the wing”, Mr Godes said.

"They were alive and responsive and moving around," he added, noting how they waved at him.

Another pilot, Dale Eicher, told KTUU he had just begun his own search over the frozen lake when he heard the news over the radio.

He said: “I called the troopers immediately because I was still in cell service and I knew it was a really good chance that the guy that had found him was not in cell service.

"I was really shocked. I didn’t expect that we would find them. I didn’t expect that we would find them alive for sure...it doesn’t always turn out this well.”

Mr Eicher told the Alaska-based news outlet that he saw three people walking on the ice.

The three family members were reportedly taken to hospital in the Kenai Peninsula and their injuries were non-life threatening.
