Fatboy Slim played a surprise show at Alexandra Palace - as a 50 metre tall hologram

If you happened to notice a holographic glimmer towering over north London’s Alexandra Palace last night, rest assured you weren't seeing things: EE have staged a secret gig featuring none other than Fatboy Slim, taking to the decks in the form of a massive hologram.

The subscription business livestreamed the unannounced show on their Instagram yesterday evening (October 24) and created the larger-than-life version of the legendary DJ ‒ real name, Norman Cook ‒ using cutting-edge technology. The 50 metre tall holo-gauze is as high as the leaning tower of Pisa, and suspended from two cranes.

Cook previously played the iconic venue earlier this summer, with a sold-out gig on June 10. Though he was back inside the venue again last night, his performance was filmed and then converted into the form of a huge projection for punters outside Ally Pally.

A well-documented fan of a secret show, he previously surprised partiers at Walthamstow Trade Hall, playing to just 250 lucky punters last month. Spinning tunes as a gigantic hologram set against the London skyline, however, is a new one.

Last week, hundreds of Fatboy Slim fans submitted their dance routines for the DJ’s massive dance hit Praise You. They then joined him as virtual backing dancers during the world first set, which featured classic bangers such as Right Here, Right Now, and The Rockafeller Skank.

Pips Taylor hosted the stream, sticking with fans as they waited to find out who would be the surprise performer for the night.

“Last night was a wild ride! We took over London’s skyline and made history,” said Fatboy Slim in a statement, following the performance. “A massive shout out to all those fans who joined me on the world’s biggest holographic stage to kickstart a brand-new era for EE.”

“Last night we made history as New EE with the world’s largest holographic performance featuring one of the nation’s best loved DJs,”

Though EE are perhaps best known as a mobile network and telecommunications brand, they’re now expanding their offerings to become the UK’s largest subscription service

“New EE is committed to becoming the UK’s most personal, customer-focused technology brand so we are proud to have been able to give people up and down the country a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform on the world’s biggest holographic stage with their musical hero, Fatboy Slim,” added MD Marketing at EE, Christian Thrane.
