On Monday night, a devastating crash occurred in Augusta County, Virginia, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving one individual injured. The incident involved a train and a passenger van, as reported by Virginia State Police.
The collision took place around 8 p.m. when a 15-passenger van carrying four passengers was en route from a solar panel work site in Stuarts Draft, Virginia. The van was struck on the driver's side by a Norfolk Southern train heading towards Waynesboro. Tragically, two men and one woman were pronounced dead at the scene by the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad at 8:13 p.m. Another female passenger sustained injuries and was taken to Augusta Health for treatment.
The crash occurred at the intersection of the train tracks and a private road on the 100 block of Wayne Ave. Eyewitnesses reported hearing the train's horn before witnessing the impact. Police confirmed that the train was not exceeding normal speed, following discussions with the conductor and engineer.
At this time, the identities of the victims have not been disclosed as authorities are working to notify their families. The Virginia State Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
