Fatal NT helicopter crash investigated

Authorities are investigating a fatal helicopter crash in remote east Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

The 47-year-old solo pilot died at the scene of the crash, which occurred south of the community of Ramingining around 2.45pm on Tuesday.

"Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing and police are working closely with all relevant stakeholders," NT Police superintendent Drew Slape said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), which is also investigating, said the two-seat Robinson R22 helicopter was destroyed in the crash.

"Over coming days ... investigators will survey and map the accident site and collect any relevant components for further examination and analysis at the ATSB's technical facilities in Canberra," ATSB chief commissioner Angus Mitchell said.

"They will also obtain and review any recorded data, weather information, witness reports, and aircraft operator procedures and maintenance records."

The ATSB expects to publish a preliminary report in six-to-eight weeks.

"However, should any critical safety issues be identified at any stage during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties so appropriate safety action can be taken," Mr Mitchell said.

In February, cast member of National Geographic's Outback Wrangler, Chris Wilson, died when the helicopter he was hanging 30 metres below collided with trees and the ground in west Arnhem Land.

A man was charged in September with conspiracy and evidence offences over the crash.
