Tragedy struck a town market in eastern France as one person was killed and multiple others were wounded in a knife attack. The incident, described by French authorities as an act of terror, unfolded at the covered canal market in Mulhouse.
The town mayor, Michèle Lutz, expressed shock and sorrow over the attack, stating that a man armed with a knife targeted passers-by at the market. Municipal police officers who intervened to stop the assailant also suffered injuries in the confrontation.
The suspect, a 37-year-old individual from Algeria, has been apprehended and is currently in police custody. The national anti-terror prosecutor's office in France is overseeing the investigation into the incident.
According to reports, the attacker specifically aimed at municipal police officers and a civilian, shouting 'Allahu Akbar' during the assault. Tragically, one civilian lost their life in the attack, while three officers sustained injuries.

French President Emmanuel Macron extended his condolences to the victim's family and acknowledged the incident as an act of Islamic terrorism. Macron emphasized the need for a thorough investigation by the national anti-terror prosecutor.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau revealed that the suspect had a prior conviction for promoting terrorism. Despite attempts to deport him to Algeria, the country refused to accept him back, leading to his continued presence in France.
Retailleau condemned the attack as another instance of Islamist terrorism and attributed the root cause to migratory issues. The incident has reignited concerns about security and counterterrorism measures in France.
