POLICE are searching for a Toyota Camry which may have a damaged bonnet after a fatal hit-and-run near Maitland on Wednesday night.

Emergency services were called to reports of a crash on the New England Highway at Harpers Hill, one kilometre east of Greta, at about 9.30pm on October 30.

Police rushed to the scene and sadly discovered a pedestrian had been struck by a car which had failed to stop.

The 37-year-old man was treated by ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

A crime scene was established, which was examined by officers from the NSW Police Force's specialist Crash Investigation Unit.

Police are now appealing for public assistance as they work to identify the driver of a 2006 to 2009 Toyota Camry or Aurion of an unknown colour.

Police believe the car may have damage to the front end and bonnet.

Anyone with information or footage related to this incident has been urged to contact police, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the online reporting page. Information is treated in strict confidence.
