An avalanche struck a group of five skiers in Italy's northern Piedmont region on Sunday, resulting in a tragic outcome that claimed the lives of three individuals. The incident occurred on the eastern face of Punta Valgrande, a summit situated on the border between Italy and Switzerland.
The avalanche, which occurred around midday, tragically dragged the skiers downhill for several hundred meters, causing fatal injuries to the victims. Two skiers managed to survive the ordeal and were airlifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Prior to the avalanche, an alert had been issued in the area above 2,100 meters (6,900 feet), warning of a 'considerable danger of avalanches.' Despite this warning, the group of skiers found themselves in a perilous situation that ultimately led to the loss of three lives.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of avalanches, especially in mountainous regions popular for winter sports. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of heeding safety warnings and being vigilant when engaging in outdoor activities in avalanche-prone areas.
