Fast and Furious 9 accident: Stuntman 'in coma' after suffering serious head injury on Warner Bros Studio set

A stuntman working on the set of Fast and Furious 9 has been seriously injured during an incident at Warner Bros Studios.

Joe Watts was airlifted to hospital following the incident in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, on Monday, the studio said.

Producers halted work on the latest instalment of the long-running franchise as police and paramedics were called to the scene.

Sources told The Sun the stuntman, said to be a double for Vin Diesel, fell “at least 30 feet” while filming a balcony scene.

His fiance, Tilly Powell, wrote on Facebook that he had suffered a serious head injury and is in an induced coma.

“He is stable and is being monitored closely throughout the night,” Ms Powell wrote on Monday.

“I love him so much and my heart is shattered. He has all his family and friends by his side to get him through this!”

Watts is a teacher at The Creative Academy as well as a professional stunt performer.

He has worked on a number of high-profile productions including Games of Thrones, Johnny English Strikes Again, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

Most recently Watts appeared in the Tom Holland-starring Spider Man: Far From Home.

A statement from The Creative Academy, managed by Slough Borough Council, said: "Staff and students from The Creative Academy at Slough Borough Council were saddened to hear of Joe's accident.

"We hope he makes a speedy recovery and send our best wishes to Joe and his family."

The latest Fast and Furious film stars franchise regulars Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez and is due for release next year.

Other films from the series have been shot at the complex, along with the Harry Potter films and movies from the Mission Impossible and James Bond franchises.

Police handed the case over to the Health and Safety Executive, which says it is investigating the incident.

A spokesman for the executive said: "HSE is investigating the incident following attendance at the site yesterday."

In an earlier statement, a spokeswoman for Universal Pictures said:“We had an injury on the set of Fast 9 today in Leavesden with one of our stuntmen.

“We have halted production for the day to focus on this situation.”

A spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said on Tuesday: “Police were called shortly before noon on Monday 22 July following an incident at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire.

“It was reported that a man had been injured while working at the location and sustained serious injuries.

“The air ambulance attended and the man was taken to hospital.

“Police officers also attended to assist at the scene and carry out initial enquiries. The incident has been referred to the Health and Safety Executive and there will be no further police involvement.”

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: "An ambulance, three ambulance officer vehicles and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were called to Leavesden Studios shortly before midday today (July 22), following reports of a man injured in a fall.

"One patient with a serious head injury was transported to the Royal London Hospital by air ambulance."

The incident comes weeks after a huge fire broke out at the 80 hectare complex. It is one of the only places in the UK where large-scale film productions can be made.
