Fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood dies 'peacefully' aged 81

Fashion legend Vivienne Westwood has died at the age of 81. In a statement on Twitter, her fashion house said she died "peacefully and surrounded" by her family in Clapham, South London.

The tribute, which was posted on Thursday evening, December 29, read: “Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better. She led an amazing life.

“Her innovation and impact over the last 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future. The world needs people like Vivienne to make a change for the better,” the post concluded.

Dame Vivienne Isabel Westwood was an English fashion designer and businesswoman, known for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream. She was born on April 8, 1941 in Tintwistle, a village and civil parish in the High Peak district of the non-metropolitan county of Derbyshire.

Dame Vivienne found fame in the 1970s when she brought punk fashions into the mainstream, running a boutique on London's King's Road alongside Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren. Westwood opened four shops in London and eventually expanded throughout Britain and the world, selling an increasingly varied range of merchandise, some of which promoted her many political causes such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, climate change and civil rights groups.

According to reports, her husband and creative partner Andreas Kronthaler said: “I will continue with Vivienne in my heart. We have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with. Thank you darling.”
