'Far too much to ask' - Former Premier League manager on Newcastle expectations under Eddie Howe

It is 'far too much to ask' Eddie Howe to lead Newcastle United to challenge for a top-six spot this season. That is according to Tim Sherwood, who has praised the Magpies decision to award the head coach a new long-term deal.

Howe was appointed as Steve Bruce's successor in November last year with United winless and staring down the barrel of a relegation battle. However, a remarkable improvement coupled with a January transfer spend in excess of £90 million saw the Magpies comfortably pull clear of danger and secure an 11th-placed finish.

Howe has already added top defensive target Sven Botman and Nick Pope to his squad, with a permanent deal also agreed for Matt Targett following an impressive loan spell. Newcastle have so far been frustrated in their efforts to sign attacking reinforcements, but did confirm a new deal for the head coach which will run for 'multiple years'.

Newcastle's transformation under Howe along with their stunning form in the second-half of last season has raised expectations on Tyneside, with commentators speculating whether a challenge for European football is possible. The Magpies began the season with a dominant win over Nottingham Forest, but Sherwood dismissed the prospect of the Magpies unseating one of the 'big six' this term.

Asked if a top-six finish could be on the cards, the former Aston Villa and Tottenham boss told Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday: "Not this season. It's far too much to ask with their signings. With no Financial Fair Play, give him the money and yeah, you've got an opportunity.

"I'm glad he's got a new contract, he's got them into this position. He went in there and saved them, he deserves this opportunity so good luck to Eddie Howe. I think he will do well if they keep him for the long run."
