'Far from a glorious homecoming' - National media reaction as Chelsea edge past Crystal Palace

Chelsea played in the Premier League for the first time in a month on Saturday following their heroics at the FIFA Club World Cup and picked up another win.

Crystal Palace were their opponents and Hakim Ziyech made sure the short trip to south London was a satisfying one, popping up in the second half to volley home the winner and secure a 1-0 victory.

It further secured their place in the top four and ensured Thomas Tuchel can now put his full focus on their upcoming Champions League tie with Lille and Carabao Cup final with Liverpool.

But how did the national media react to their weekend win?

BBC Sport

"Winners keep going until the very end, a quality illustrated perfectly by reigning world and European champions Chelsea at Selhurst Park as they scored the decisive goal in the 89th minute.

"Up until that point, they had been finding it difficult to make inroads against a resolute Palace backline, with striker Lukaku particularly suffering.

"Without injured wing-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell, Tuchel switched from a 5-3-2 to a 4-3-3 formation, but the Belgium international lacked any service and had just seven touches of the ball in the whole game.

"Lukaku netted in both games at the Club World Cup but has now netted just once in the past eight games in domestic action and question marks remain about whether he fits into the Chelsea system."

The Guardian

"Chelsea have developed a useful habit of leaving things until the last minute and it needed a late volley from Hakim Ziyech to snatch a victory that was scarcely deserved.

"But having arrived here shorn of wingbacks and being forced into a tactical reshuffle a few days after being crowned world champions, Thomas Tuchel was certainly not complaining.

"Four weeks had passed since Chelsea’s victory over Tottenham in their last Premier League match and they have required extra-time to progress past Plymouth and Palmeiras in the intervening period.

"The latter in Abu Dhabi last week meant their kits proudly sported a new badge signifying their status as World Club champions – an honour that has clearly been welcomed at Stamford Bridge."

MailOnline

"The world champions were in Croydon yesterday but you would have hardly noticed.

"Chelsea won, but this was far from a glorious or convincing homecoming, Thomas Tuchel’s side relying on a final-minute goal from Hakim Ziyech to maintain their slender hopes of winning the title.

"Fresh from their Club World Cup triumph in Abu Dhabi last weekend, the Blues were laboured at best. But a win is a win. When you get to this period in the season that’s all that matters.

"Indeed, it speaks volumes for Chelsea’s mental strength that they managed to get over the line against a resolute Palace, who deserved more than last-minute heartache."

Sky Sports

"Hakim Ziyech's volley in the 89th-minute snatched a late 1-0 win for newly-crowned world champions Chelsea at Crystal Palace.

"The game looked destined to end goalless but the Blues made it nine wins on the bounce against Palace after substitute Marcos Alonso's cross found Ziyech free at the back post to strengthen Chelsea's hold on third spot.

"Ziyech is certainly doing a good job of covering over the cracks for Chelsea. He has now scored in three consecutive league games for the first time since 2019 - when he was still an Ajax player.

"Thomas Tuchel's side move seven points clear of fourth-placed Manchester United, who have the chance to close that gap when they play Leeds on Sunday."
