Fantasy Insider Report: How the Lions Will Use Their Running Backs

The Athlon Sports 2023 Fantasy Football Annual magazine reached out to team insiders at all 32 NFL clubs to ask them three key fantasy questions heading into the season. As we count down to training camp, Sports Illustrated will publish their answers here. Today’s team: Detroit Lions

What’s the anticipated carry split between David Montgomery and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs?
Montgomery should get the lion’s share of the carries, particularly on early downs; he should be in line for 200-plus carries again. His touchdown numbers could climb as well without a running quarterback to vulture goal-line opportunities. Both Montgomery and Gibbs bring something in the passing game, and Gibbs — a big-play threat with elite speed and hands — may look more like a receiver at times, whether motioning out wide or on wheel and option routes. Look for at least 100 carries and 50-plus receptions from the rookie.

Will Marvin Jones Jr. take on a primary role while Jameson Williams is out?
Jones might be worth a late-round look in fantasy drafts with Williams suspended for the first six games. The sure-handed veteran saw his role diminished in Jacksonville last year, but he remains a reliable target and should get some more red-zone opportunities for a Lions team that loves to spread the ball around.

What should we expect out of the Lions’ tight end position?
The Lions’ tight end room took a hit when T.J. Hockenson was traded at the deadline last fall, but that group still set a franchise record with 12 TDs on the season. Brock Wright had four of those and may begin training camp as the No. 1 TE, but the Lions drafted Sam LaPorta to be Hockenson’s replacement, and the rookie figures to be the starter in September.
