Fantasy Football: Waiver targets for Week 9

It was an exciting and interesting Week 8, where we saw the some new names enter into our collective fantasy football minds. Injuries and breakout stars are going to send fantasy managers scrambling to waivers this week, and we can full you in on who to target before waivers clear.

1. Trey McBride, TE, Arizona Cardinals

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Tight end is the thinnest position in all of fantasy football, so when a player has a breakout game at the position, it’s time to take note. With starter Zach Ertz out on injured reserve, second year pro Trey McBride took full advantage to the tune of 25 fantasy points in a breakout game. McBride should remain productive even when Ertz returns in a few weeks, especially with quarterback Kyler Murray re-entering the fold. Fire McBride up as a top ten tight end option this week due to his physical ability and expected volume.

2. Will Levis, QB, Tennessee Titans

Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

It’s unlikely anyone saw the game that rookie quarterback Will Levis had coming with the Tennessee Titans announced him as the starter last week against a tough Atlanta Falcons defense. Levis looked every bit the part of a new age passer, running around and just make some ridiculous throws. It would be hasty to expect that from him every week as Levis is still fairly raw as a pro quarterback, but the potential for explosive games is certainly there. Roster him and see what happens if you need a quarterback.

3. Jonathan Mingo, WR, Carolina Panthers

You can certainly tell Carolina wants to get their second round rookie receiver involved in this offense given his tremendous snap usage increase over the last two weeks. While Jonathan Mingo didn’t take full advantage of those snaps he did still come away with a respectable ten fantasy points on the day. Bryce Young and Mingo are developing a connection, and if it continues to grow Mingo could rapidly become the receiver to roster in Carolina.

4. Taysom Hill, TE/QB, New Orleans Saints

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

It does start to feel like déjà vu whenever we write about a breakout game from Taysom Hill, only for him to slink back to the standard four or five points a game we are used to from the ultra talented tool box player. Hill has strung together multiple fantasy relevant performances and looked as good as ever with 77 scrimmage yards and a pair of touchdowns. It’s likely going to end up frustrating to guess whether New Orleans will use him or not, but it’s best to roster him and fire him up this week if you need a tight end, he might be around to stay this time.
