A sequel to Alien: Isolation has been officially confirmed in a statement posted on X by the original game’s creative director.
“On the 10th anniversary, it seems only fitting to let you know we have heard your distress calls loud and clear,” the statement from Al Hope reads.
“Today, I’m delighted to confirm, on behalf of the team, that a sequel to Alien: Isolation is in early development.”
Alien: Isolation and its sequel are works of developer The Creative Assembly, which released the game in 2014.
Despite being now regarded as a contender for the best Alien game adaptation of all time, Alien: Isolation was not initially a hit.
In 2015, publisher Sega announced Alien: Isolation had sold 2.1 million copies in what its financial reports described as a “weak” year for sales.
Its appeal has proved enduring, though, and concurrent players hit a peak of 1800-plus on Steam in August following the release of the 5-star rated Alien: Romulus.
Alien: Isolation’s all-time PC player peak was not anywhere near its actual release either, according to SteamDB, but in April 2020 when its price on Steam was reduced to just £1.50 as part of Alien Day celebrations. More than 10,000 players were playing the game on Steam at the same time in that period.
Not played Alien: Isolation? It aimed to reproduce the tension and dread of the first Alien movie from 1979, by making you unable to kill the alien, and giving it AI that stalks you as you wander around the Sevastopol space station in which the game is set.
It’s atmospheric, creepy and ambitious.
There are no hints as to how similar Alien: Isolation 2 will be to the original, and its “early development” status suggests we have years to wait until the game is released.
The Creative Assembly’s releases in the last decade offer no clues either. Almost all its games over the last 25 years have been part of the strategy-based Total War series.
Some of the work technically done on the now-cancelled Hyenas may be put to use in the Alien: Isolation sequel, though. Hyenas was going to be a fast-paced shooter with zero-gravity gameplay elements, before its development was canned by publisher Sega in September 2023.
