Fans gutted as Greggs closes for Queen's funeral bank holiday

Greggs is to shut all of its stores on Monday as a mark of respect to the Queen. The closures will take place on Monday, September 19, the day of the Queen's funeral.

Monday has been declared a bank holiday by King Charles following the death of the Queen. Despite the bank holiday being announced at short notice many shops and attractions are closing to honour the late monarch.

In a statement on its official Twitter account, Greggs said: "To give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Greggs shops will be closed on Monday, September 19. A small number of our shops, operated by our franchise partners, may remain open. Thanks for your understanding."

But fans of the bakery chain have been left disappointed by the closure announcement, which came just five days before the bank holiday. Customers took to social media to share their annoyance at the news.

@kiwis_on said: "This is devastating news." The Great Keithulhu (@joejglenton) replied to Greggs' post with: "Who even are you anymore?"

While Jamie Allerton (@JayAllerton) said: "Not you Greggs… not like this…"

Some customers said the closures would have an impact on their families. Many customers go to Greggs with their children as a treat. Jamie added: "It’s the only day I get to see my kids, little Ben loves a steak bake."

Tom Cunliffe (@VolksDK) replied to Greggs and said: "Cheers, son's crying."

Other's believed closing the shops is the right decision. John Shirayuki (@Wolf_JS_Games) asked: "What's wrong exactly? They're closing for a day so folk can mourn."
