FANS of the world’s best-selling video game have been delighted after developers announced the introduction of Highland cows.
The iconic Scottish breed is set to feature in Minecraft, which has around 200 million monthly users.
In an announcement to its 10 million followers on Instagram on Wednesday, Minecraft’s official account said: “Oh moo goodness! We’ve got more features coming into testing.”
The post, which has been liked more than 450,000 times, said new features included fireflies, ambient desert sounds, and “two new cow variants: warm and cool cows”.
Although the “cool cows” were not specifically named as Highland cows, their appearance left fans in little doubt.
“HIGHLAND COW MY BELOVED,” one user responded on Instagram.
“HEILAN COO LETS GOO,” a second wrote, using the Scots.
A third added: “Woolly cow!!!! Mojang my heart is yours here.”
Mojang Studios is the Swedish developer behind the best-selling game, which officially launched in 2011.
In 2014, Microsoft bought the studio and Minecraft for a reported $2.5 billion.
News of the Highland cows’ addition was also shared on the Scotland page of Reddit.
A post read: “Minecraft added our Highland Coo to the game!”
“I hope it drops higher quality beef than the regular cows,” one user quipped in response.
Last year, it was announced that Minecraft is to become a real-life destination in a deal with UK-based theme park owner Merlin.
The owner of Legoland, Alton Towers ,and Thorpe Park agreed on a deal with Mojang Studios to invest more than £85 million in the first two Minecraft attractions in its existing UK and US parks between 2026 and 2027.
