The Lord of the Rings fans have flooded star Dominic Monaghan with support as he announced his podcast, The Friendship Onion, is going on hiatus.
The actor, who played hobbit Merry in the film franchise, hosts the podcast with co-star Billy Boyd, who took on the role of fellow hobbit Pippin. The popular podcast sees the pair reminisce about their time on The Lord of the Rings, often featuring interviews with cast and crew and answering questions from fans.
But Dominic, who moved to Stockport, Greater Manchester from Germany at 11 years old, said that The Friendship Onion would be going on a break as he and Billy focused on other projects. Taking to Instagram on Thursday (January 4), he posted a statement which read: "The Friendship Onion will be going on hiatus for the time being, while we are both focusing on our projects.

"We look forward to bringing you all more information on Friendship Onion in the very near future!" He captioned the post: "More news about @thefriendshiponion when we are able to report it".
While disappointed that they'd be missing out on their favourite podcast, which launched in May 2021, fans were quick to support Dominic and Billy. Many were excited to see what their new projects were.
@mizzfitnyc commented: "Yay!! Best of luck to you and Billy on your projects! Can't wait to see what they are!" while @lauren.lalaith added: "Very sad to hear this but 100% understandable!!" @oxxy.mulder said: "Thank you both for everything you have given us so far!!" and @ehmuhlee_93 commented: "Enjoy your time focusing on projects! We'll be excited to welcome you back when you can".
@steevin_hayum added: "I’ll miss it but best of luck with your current projects!" while @kaylaorrx said: "Take all the time you need for your upcoming projects but I hope it does revive as we all love it!!"
Dominic had his first taste of the spotlight in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, a wholesome BBC drama that ran from 1996 to 1998. After landing the role of Merry in The Lord of the Rings, he went on to play Charlie in the ABC show Lost.
He has now lived in Los Angeles for almost two decades, and admitted to the Manchester Evening News in 2021 that he was hanging onto his Mancunian accent by a thread, but it was “a bit all over the place” now.
