Republic of Ireland fans have expressed their disappointment with comments Brian Kerr made about Stephen Kenny after the Republic of Ireland boss penned a contract extension.
Kenny will now lead the Boys in Green into their qualification campaign for Euro 2024 after some encouraging performances late last year.
But Kerr remains critical of the former Dundalk boss over results earlier in his reign.
Speaking on Virgin Media Sport's Champions League coverage on Wednesday night, Kerr commented: "I'm happy for Stephen. The FAI haven't always been very good at renewing contracts, or they've renewed contracts before they should have.
“My view overall was that we went tamely out of three different competitions since Stephen got the job.
“We went out of the Nations League and failed to win a match against Finland, Bulgaria and Wales. Ultimately, that comes back on you, whether that’s around coefficients or play-off places.
“Then we lost the play-off match (for Euro 2020), which was only a semi-final against Slovakia, and then the World Cup, we went out from the start. We lost the match with Serbia early on, lost to Portugal, maybe a little bit unfortunate to lose that match early on.”
But fans didn't agree with the former Ireland boss and took to social media to have their say.
One said: "Brian Kerr's comments on the Stephen Kenny contract are interesting as much as they are disappointing... Perhaps feels hard done by after he didn't get a second chance after the 2006 campaign... However, ISRAEL still haunts me from that WC Qualifying campaign so."
Another tweeted: "Brian Kerr's negative punditry is definitely one of the weirdest parts of the Stephen Kenny era, I just don't...get it?"
Someone else joked: "Brian Kerr has blamed PSG's collapse on Stephen Kenny."
