In news that feels noice, different, and unusual, Charli xcx has fuelled whispers of an Australian visit after using an iconic soundbite from Kath and Kim in a recent TikTok video.
On Wednesday, the pop star posted a TikTok that was filmed backstage at the Chicago stop of her joint Sweat tour with Troye Sivan. That all seems pretty standard, but the video pricked the ears of Aussie fans since it was soundtracked by a quote from the beloved sitcom’s very first episode.
“I’m very proud of how I look,” Charli is seen (deservedly) miming in the video. “Yes I am high maintenance, but I think you gotta be”. Hang that quote in the Louvre alongside a statue of little baby cheeses.
Putting aside the fact that, by their very essence, Kath and Kim the definition of brat (petition for them to appear on the remix album starts now), Charli’s use of the distinctly Australian sound has been taken as confirmation that she will tour the country, perhaps as part of the 2024 lineup for Laneway Festival.
Charli’s channelling of the two Aussie icons — who are on par with Bunnings sausage sizzles and clothesline goon sacks — coincides with a brat-green billboard emblazoned with the word “Laneway” appearing on Australian streets on Wednesday.
Reportedly located in Sydney’s Marrickville, the poster is designed in the exact style of the now-iconic brat album cover (green is the new black), so it’s all the confirmation fans need to declare Charli as Laneway’s 2024 headliner.
It could also just be the case that Charli is simply a Kath and Kim stan like the rest of us (moisyelf included), and that the Aussie billboard was just replicated by a fan à la Crumbl Cookies. But where’s the fun in that?
For what it’s worth, we’ll at least get one half of the Sweat tour in the form of Sivan’s run of solo Aussie shows slated for November, but we won’t know for sure whether his co-headliner will perform at Laneway until the official lineup drops on October 9.
Until then, I’m gonna embark on my eleven hundredth rewatch of Kath and Kim, and continue pining for a partner like Kel.
