Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper is facing a fan petition to sell the franchise following an incident last Sunday that saw him throw a drink from his suite onto Jacksonville Jaguars fans seated below him.
The NFL fined Tepper $300,000 for his actions.
Panthers fan Joey Blethen started the petition on New Year’s Day. At the time of this writing, the petition has nearly 4,500 signatures.
In the details behind the petition, Blethen noted several poor highlights of Tepper’s tenure as owner, including trading star running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver D.J. Moore, as well as mortgaging several future draft picks for quarterback Bryce Young. Blethen also noted the “anger issues” of Tepper, including him tossing the drink on an opposing fan on Sunday.
Tepper has quickly become a villain for Panthers fans given the team’s poor performance with him as the owner. Tepper purchased the franchise in 2018 and holds a 31–67 record since taking over command.
The Panthers play their final game of the season on Sunday at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
