Famous Scots country estate once linked to Paul "Gazza" Gascoigne on sale for offers above £3.5 million

A country estate with historic links to football has hit the market at offers over £3.5 million.

Haddockston House has a disused golf course in the grounds and a trout loch.

Paul “Gazza” Gascoigne was said to be buying the Renfrewshire pile in 1995 - but that turned out to be a fishy story.

Sixteen years ago Celtic player John Hartson was served with a writ for not paying £37,000 rent to the then millionaire owner, Hugh Scott, who also owned Greenock Morton.

The 60 acre estate lies three miles from Houston and the mansion house itself has been split into a total of eight homes.

Agents Corum say: “The extensive grounds include a variety of mature trees and a nine-hole golf course which Is currently not in use.

“A small loch and trout fishery provides a rental income and is run under separate management. The walled garden previously had planning permission and offers further development potential, subject to local authority consents.”

At one point an expansion plan was considered to turn the golf course, which was developed by Hugh Scott, into an 18-hole layout.

No internal pictures of the house have been made available and it is understood one of the eight apartments is not included in the sale.

The beauty spot loch spans three acres, is ten feet deep and is crystal clear thanks to its spring fed source.

Gazza, then Rangers most high profile signing, lived at The White House in nearby Kilbarchan and was a keen angler.

He is thought to have fly fished for trout at Haddockston in a bid to escape the huge spotlight on him.

Harston owed six months rent for part of the pile after he split from his wife Lowri. She had moved back to Cardiff with their children and he moved to rented digs.

Sheriffs officers famously handed Hartson the Haddockston court papers while he was in the middle of a Celtic training session.
