Famous rugby father and talented son triumph at Principality Stadium as coach and captain

Ireland forwards coach Simon Easterby has been lending a hand on the coaching staff of his son's school team in recent weeks, helping them win Intermediate Group Year 8 Cup Final on Monday.

After finishing up his Six Nations duties with Ireland, Easterby - who played over 150 games for the Scarlets - joined the Bro Morgannwg coaching team, led by Rhys Beynon. Easterby's son, Ffredi - who has also represented Wales under-13s at cricket - is captain of the side who beat Penweddig 31-19 in the final at the Principality Stadium.

Tries from Trystan Coates, Efan Vaughan, Evan Weekes, Richie Jenkins and Evan Mitchell and three conversions from Rhys Muxworthy gave Bro Morgannwg an unassailable lead, capping a fine day for all involved, including the Easterbys.

“It’s brilliant and the boys have been fantastic. I’ve only jumped in at the last minute off the back of the Six Nations,” said Easterby snr, who is married to television presenter Sarra Elgan.

“They have been brilliantly coached by Mr Beynon and they are a great bunch of boys who work really hard for each other. It is a challenge coaching your own son and I was more nervous today than on most international days.

“It was a great occasion and the WRU put on a really good show. It is something the boys will remember for a long time.

“They played some tough games to get here and the team they were up against a very good side in Penweddig. I’m sure we will see a few of them in the future running out here again in a red jersey.”
