Famous cafe slammed for charging 'extortionate' prices for hot chocolate and a bun

A famous cafe often frequented by visiting holidaymakers has found itself in hot water due to the price of its coco and bun deal.

Bewley's in Dublin is arguably Ireland's most famous eatery, due in part to its impressive building, place on the central thoroughfare and 180 years of heritage.

It is known for its in-house hot chocolate, which is served with mini marshmallows, cream and orange chocolate shavings, and the thousands of delicious cakes, eclairs, sticky buns and other confectionery treats it sells every day, Dublin Live reported.

This week the cafe has found itself making headlines for different reasons however.

A regular hot chocolate and a small coffee icing éclair bun currently costs €15.60 (£13.67).

The prices have been described as “completely extortionate” and "scandalous" by People Before Profit chief Paul Murphy.

It is understood it is Bewley’s policy to present customers with a price list before they order in their Grafton Street cafe.

A Dublin Live reporter claimed this did not happen when they visited, with the price only becoming known at the end of the meal.

Mr Murphy added: “These reported prices being charged for hot chocolate and buns are completely extortionate.

"It is quite scandalous that these prices could be charged in an industry which is seeking the extension of the 9% VAT rate and where there is widespread low pay. In the midst of a cost of living crisis, these prices are just unacceptable.”

A spokesperson for Bewleys defended their pricing.

They said: “Our table-served Bewley’s hot chocolate is a much-loved favourite at the Cafe which uses only the finest quality Fair Trade cocoa beans.

"It is served on a handmade board along with three pots containing marshmallows, chocolate curls and whipped cream so that customers can create their own perfect hot chocolate experience.”
