Family thanks local community as thousands raised in memory of Co Fermanagh pair who died suddenly

A Lisnaskea family has thanked the local community for their support after a skydive fundraiser raised £16,000 in memory of two family members who died suddenly a year apart.

Nicola McGovern, 32, from Lisnaskea died in May 2020, and little over a year later her teenage niece Katie-May McDermott sadly also lost her life in July 2021.

Just a year after Katie-May’s death some of her family and friends took part in a charity skydive, which saw funds going to local counselling service and GAA club Lisnaskea Emmetts.

Katie-May’s mum and Nicola’s sister Brenda McGovern said the family were truly humbled by the response from all those who participated in the fundraiser.

“We have such a great community here and we are just so grateful to all those people who contributed however they could,” Brenda told Belfast Live.

“We were delayed the first time due to the weather but we were able to do the skydive last weekend. It was a lovely day.

“It was a brilliant effort all around especially when the money is going back in to our own community. It’s just something that we felt we had to do, the Aisling Centre have been a great source of help to us in the last couple of years.”

Brenda added that Nicola and Katie-May would have been so proud of all the family and friends who took part in the skydive.

She added: “They would have just been so proud of everyone who helped out, especially the four who did the jump.

“Some of them were very nervous in the lead up but were cool as a cucumber then when it came to the day.

“I just couldn’t thank them all enough. It was just an unbelievable gesture and we never expected to raise as much as we did.”
