Family terrified as Fenham home is targeted in frightening 'mistaken identity' attacks

A family is living in fear after their home was twice targeted in what they believe are "mistaken identity" attacks.

Haroon and Shahnaz Ayoub and their five children were asleep at their house in Newcastle when a stranger set the front door alight late at night in January.

Then this weekend the family were targeted again when a window at the property, on Fenham's Wingrove Road was smashed.

Footage from the Ayoub's home CCTV appears to show both attacks were carried out by the same person. And Haroon believes the culprit has mistaken their home for someone else's.

Northumbria Police is investigating both incidents. And today Haroon has told of his family's fears.

The 49-year-old said: "I'm under so much stress, my family is at risk. I just feel unsafe in my own home now. It's all because someone else has upset someone.

The first incident happened on the night of January 9.

"It was 10.30pm. The wife got a phone call saying 'your front door is on fire'," Haroon explained. "I ran downstairs and I saw all the smoke. There was no fire, there was just a lot of smoke. Then within seconds the fire engine turned up. There was a considerable amount of damage to the front door."

After checking his CCTV cameras Haroon discovered that a passing driver had stopped his car and put out the fire.

"He probably saved our lives," he said. There could have been fatalities. For a week or so our family couldn't sleep."

Haroon, who can't think of any reason why his home would be targeted in such a way had hoped the incident was a "one off". But overnight on Saturday one of the home's front windows was smashed.

Haroon believes the same person was responsible for both attacks. Police are now appealing for witnesses.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “We are investigating reports of suspected arson and criminal damage at an address on Wingrove Road, Newcastle.

“The first incident of suspected arson was reported to police on January 10, which saw male approach the door of the address and pour an unknown substance on the door, subsequently setting it alight.

“Then, on Sunday morning, we received a report of criminal damage which involved the window of the property being smashed.

“Thankfully, no-one was injured in either incident. Enquires are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police."
