Family say they are 'devastated' at death of much-loved dad after he was killed in horror crash

The family of a pensioner killed in a Lanarkshire car crash have told of how they are "devastated" at his death.

Michael McManamon, 73, from Glasgow died after a Mercedes C220 was involved in a crash with a Ford Mondeo last Friday on Mill Street in Rutherglen.

The incident occured at the junction with Kings Park Avenue.

The 34-year-old male driver of the Ford Mondeo was not injured and has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Michael was the passenger of the Mercedes C220. The 80-year-old male driver of the Mercedes was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he died a short time later.

In a statement Mr McManamon’s family said: "We are devastated at the loss of our much loved dad, papa and friend.

"He will be sorely missed but we are comforted by the messages from the community, who valued his help and friendship over the many years".

Residents on the street have also told of their horror after the tragedy.

One local who lives at the scene told Lanarkshire Live : "We heard a loud thump outside and didn’t know what it was.

"We went down to have a look and saw that it was serious.

"The police and ambulance were on the scene very quickly, and the road was closed off - it didn’t open again until nearly lunchtime on Saturday.

"You get the odd bump at the lights every now and then, but I don’t remember anything this serious happening before. It’s very, very sad."

Police continued to be present at the scene throughout the weekend, and were spotted by residents in the car park at flats near to the scene.

Speed cameras were put in place on Mill Street in 2018 after a number of accidents on the road over the years.

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses.

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder, Lanarkshire Road Policing Unit told us: “Our thoughts remain with both deceased’s family and friends.

“Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances and I would urge anyone who may be able to help and who hasn’t yet spoken to police to get in touch.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.

Information can also be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
