Family's home 'completely destroyed' in Bestwood house fire

A Nottinghamshire family have been left "devastated" after their home was destroyed by a fire over the weekend. Firefighters were called to a property in Gladehill Road in Bestwood after a fire broke out in the early hours of the morning.

Emily Wardle, her partner and four-year-old daughter were asleep when the blaze broke out but all managed to evacuate safely. However, the house was left in a "complete and utter mess", her younger sister Amy said.

The 36-year-old teaching assistant, who was speaking on behalf of the family to Nottinghamshire Live, said Emily, 40, was devastated. "The house is completely destroyed, there's no ceilings or roof," she said.

"Everything in the bedrooms is completely destroyed, smoke damage, fire damage, water damage. I'm just so glad that they got out. At four o'clock in the morning they were both asleep.

"The whole thing is just crazy, the family is still in shock at what happened. My sister called me early on Saturday, I went over to help and support in any way I could."

Following an investigation, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue confirmed the fire had been caused accidentally. Amy said her sister and niece had been provided with a hotel room due to the house being "uninhabitable" following the blaze.

"They're devastated, my sister is in floods of tears and wants the whole thing to be done," she said. "She wants to go home and relax in her house. My niece thinks the hotel is a holiday because she doesn't understand, but at the same time she keeps asking why she can't go home where all her things are."

Amy started a GoFundMe for the family and paid tribute to those who offered their help on the day, including neighbours who took them in. "All of her food has gone, she's only got the stuff on her back. We've tried to salvage things but there's not much, that's why I started the GoFundMe," she said.

"My niece is at nursery and she's got no uniform and food. The donations that are coming through are so helpful."
