Family's heartfelt tribute to 'kind and bubbly' man who died in M1 crash

The family of a 'kind and bubbly' man who died in a crash on the M1 say he 'was someone who would help absolutely anybody'.

Harris Gondwe, aged 38, died "on the spot" after the multi-vehicle collision on January 20.

The crash closed the motorway for most of the day southbound between junction 26 for the A610 (Nottingham / Eastwood) and junction 25 for the A52 Brian Clough Way (Nottingham / Derby).

Another man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Gondwe sister's Eliza Mtete told Nottinghamshire Live he had been going to areas such as Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent and visiting friends.

In a heartfelt tribute, she said: "He was someone who would help absolutely anybody.

"He wouldn't care about a person's colour, how they looked, he wouldn't judge anyone at all. He would do anything for you.

"He didn't think of himself very often, only other people."

The family are now trying to raise money in order to send Mr Mr Gondwe's body back home to Malawi.

A statement on the page, which has been started by his family, reads: "[We] can't believe all of this as it is a sudden death that's taken us all by shock and we are truly saddened and heartbroken.

"Born on 15th May 1983, Harris was a loving, kind bubbly person who would do anything for people around him and even those he didn't know. He was a brave character and a blessing to us all.

"We are appealing for donations to help his sister Eliza Mtete to take her brother back home back home to Malawi to his final resting place and for his parents, family and friends to say goodbye.

"We will truly miss you, Harris."

“Our thoughts are firmly with their families and friends and specially trained officers are working with them and providing support during this extremely difficult time.

“We would continue to urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any dash-cam footage to get in touch on 101, quoting incident number 34 of 20 January 2022."
