Family's 'gut-wrenching' bathroom transformed by charity that saves lives every day

This is the 'gut-wrenching image of a bathroom that a family was forced to live in because they couldn't afford to pay for repairs. They are one of the millions of families helped by Depher Cic Uk.

Sharing the image of Twitter, James Anderson, who founded and runs the charity, said: "Now imagine if this was your bathroom or your parents, relatives or friends bathroom. What would they do, or what would you do if you had no help at all.

"Depheruk has helped 1,678 families with what you see here, but imagine if we did not exist."

Dozens of people responded to the post, one person wrote: "Absolutely gut-wrenching. I’ve donated again James and will continue to help whenever I can. You are such a hero to these extremely vulnerable people, I hope your team continues to grow and those in dire need find you."

Another said: "You show the reality of how some people actually live, it’s so appalling- so many people failed on a monumental scale - majority of these situations never make the light of day - thank you James for all you do."

James gets called out to people in despair every day of the week. He recently visited a family in hospital with a daughter who had just undergone a major heart operation. They had 38p in their bank and worried about how they were going to survive while being away from work to be by their daughter's side.

James transferred £500 to ensure they could eat for the following week.

In another heartbreaking recent case, he visited an 87-year-old at home who was ready with a noose. She had no money and couldn't pay her electricity bills. Thanks to James' help, she is now in touch with the right support.

James first decided to launch his charity, which is based in Burnley but helps 6,000 people across the UK per week, after making a promise to his dying son, William, that he would be a better man.

William was born with a serious heart condition and tragically died in 2013. But James has created an incredible legacy for his son, helping millions of people in need in his honour.

James, 55, said: "Out of our pin and grief, anger and frustration, Depheruk was born. To heaven, our angel went."

The charity has now been running for six years, and helps desperate people all over the UK, who are either referred to them or contacted directly.

One woman who was 'too scared to ask for help' received a huge food parcels after her friends contacted the charity on her behalf. But sometimes they sadly do have to turn people down if donations are low.

"We've had to refuse six people who have come to us through referrals from the council, social services," he said. "These people have got no money, got no gas, got no food or electric these people are looking at being homeless or are suicidal and we've been asked to help them. It breaks my heart to say no because I've never said no before to someone who could be at the end of it.

"But I had to for a reason because for six years we've asked for help. We've done thousands upon thousands of work for them but they have never helped us back. I'm absolutely gutted, but I've got to stand by ground.

"We pay tax and VAT and we can't support Government charities with an endless pot of money because we don't have an endless pot of money."
