Family-run Edinburgh takeaway set to become dine-in restaurant with outdoor seating

A popular Edinburgh family-run chippy and Italian takeaway has launched expansion plans which would see the business operate as a restaurant with outdoor seating.

Giovanni's, on Northfield Broadway, has submitted a change of use application to the council's planning team detailing their ambitions to expand and create 20 indoor seating covers, as well as outdoor seating.

The multi-award winning establishment is situated next to a Chinese takeaway and Broadfields bar in the east of the capital. Currently open for delivery and takeaway, Giovanni's wish to include a number of tables inside and out.

Several internal alterations would also take place, according to plans submitted online, including the current servery kiosk being moved and a pizza preparation zone built.

The plans also show space outside which could become an outdoor dining area, although the number of potential covers has not been disclosed as of yet.

According to Giovanni's website, the business has been family-run for 45 years. They say: "It all began in 1969, when Giovanni Pacitti and his wife Maria took ownership. Then called The Northfield Fish Restaurant, newly-weds Giovanni and Maria bought the shop from her father and renamed it Giovanni’s.

"They were dedicated to building a business that produced excellent food in a warm family friendly environment. Initially, it was very hard work. Giovanni spent his mornings visiting the fish market, transporting fish back to the shop and gutting them, not to mention peeling and chopping potatoes by hand.

"Only a few hours later, he and Maria would return to the shop to begin service until late. Giovanni and Maria worked seven days a week for seven years."

By 1975, four children were born, all of which worked in the shop from the age of 16. The shop is now run by sons Lorenzo and Mauro.
