Family pay tribute to 'best friend' dad Anthony Watson who died at work in Bulwell

The family of a man who died while at work in Bulwell have paid tribute to a "character" and "best friend". It is understood that Anthony Watson, also known as Tony, died on July 11 while working at Cheshires of Nottingham, a flooring distributor owned by Headlam Group.

It is unknown how granddad Mr Watson, who turned 50 in June, died. Headlam Group officials said an investigation by authorities was ongoing. Mr Watson's son Luke, 22, said his dad lived in Bulwell and was "very popular" around pubs in the area.

Both Mr Watson and his son enjoyed going to Liverpool games, and these trips to Anfield are among Luke's most cherished memories. Luke, who works in the construction trade, lives in the family home and said "it felt like a nightmare" when he found out his father would not be coming home, who also leaves behind wife Michelle Watson and another son Ryan Watson.

Luke said: "It still doesn't feel real yet. In our family we're all trying to stay strong for each other. We were best friends, we did everything together. He absolutely loved going to the pub and watching football.

"My dad loved going to watch Liverpool, too; we were in the Kop to see them beat Aston Villa just before Christmas last year, and it was always great when all the family would get together and enjoy meals. Everyone around Bulwell knows and loves him, I don't know anyone with a bad word to say about him.

"He was so loved by everyone, he was such a good guy - me and mum are trying to keep strong for each other. There's a memorial outside Cheshires where he worked, too, where loads have paid their respects."

A spokesperson for Headlam Group said: "Tony Watson was a much-valued colleague of everyone at Cheshires. Our sincere condolences are with Tony's family and friends, and our priority is to support them at this difficult time.

"Tony worked for us for more than 33 years and was not just a work colleague, he was considered a friend and an irreplaceable member of the Cheshires team - everyone has been shocked and deeply saddened by his death. We will continue to give our full support and co-operation to the ongoing investigation currently being undertaken by the authorities."

Detective Sergeant Simon Carter, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Officers responded to an incident in Dabell Avenue, Bulwell, shortly before 10.55am on Monday, July 11.

“Sadly, a man was pronounced dead at the scene and our thoughts are with the man’s family, friends and to all those who knew him. Investigations are currently ongoing and we are working in partnership with local authorities to understand exactly what happened.”

The UK Health and Security Executive has been contacted for comment.
