A Scottish chippy has been named as one of the best in the UK.
East Coast, which is based in Musselburgh, was the only Scottish selection to appear on The Times 10 best fish and chip shop in the UK. The publication praised the restaurant for its menu, which they said ‘reflects on the Italian heritage’ of the Crolla family, who have owned the business for almost 50 years.
Locals first encountered the family’s iconic food when their chip shop first opened in 1974. It was formerly known as The Coral Reef Fish and Chip Shop, before relaunching as East Coast in November 2018.
Carlo Crolla has been at the helm of the business since taking over from his dad in 2002, before being joined by his wife Katia when they got married in 2006.
The pair put in long 90 hour weeks to get the chippy to where it is today. And with an estimated 10,500 chippies based in the UK, it’s easy to see that the hard work has well and truly paid off.
The swanky East Coast restaurant boasts the likes of langoustine scampi, calamari, lemon sole, beer battered king prawns and a range of chippy classics on its menu.
Scots can also order takeaway from their premises next door. The Times review read: “Carlo and Katia Crolla have chip fat in their DNA, having descended from families of fryers.
“The restaurant menu reflects their Italian heritage, with linguini gammas and scallop-and-prawn-filled panciotti, but the takeaway stays closer to home, with Stornoway black-pudding fritters and haggis bites alongside the cod, haddock and twice-cooked chips. Haddock and chips £6.70.”
