Relatives of a couple who were assaulted outside a McDonald's drive-thru in Los Angeles are expressing their anger after learning that District Attorney George Gascón may dismiss the most serious charge against the suspect.
The incident occurred in March when a homeless man allegedly punched 74-year-old Jose Juan Rangel Hernandez through a car door window, as reported by the victims' family.
Veronica Rangel, the victims' daughter, voiced her frustration, stating, 'I feel helpless. We have to fight with the district attorney for them to do their job. You have to look at it with the human touch of the damages that this man has caused our family.'
Maria Guadalupe Vargas Luna, who is diabetic and partially blind, tried to assist her husband during the attack and reportedly fell, hitting her head and suffering a heart attack en route to the hospital. Tragically, she faced complications from medical procedures and was left brain-dead after a subsequent heart attack.
Despite the family's pleas, Gascón's office intends to dismiss the felony charge against the suspect, Charles Green, and proceed with only a misdemeanor battery charge.
William Cantabrana, the victims' grandson, expressed his dismay, stating, 'They made it seem like it was her fault for getting out of the car and trying to defend my grandpa. She got out to help him, not to fight the man.'
Gascón's office defended its decision, claiming that the evidence does not establish proof of an intentional act leading to Ms. Vargas' fall.
The family continues to seek justice for their loved ones, questioning the handling of the case by the district attorney's office.
