Family of Vicky Phelan says goodbye as campaigner laid to rest following private funeral

Vicky Phelan has been laid to rest after a private funeral in accordance with her wishes.

The family of the cervical cancer campaigner said a final farewell to her in a private ceremony. In a statement from her husband Jim and her children Amelia and Darragh, family said. “She was the heart and soul of our family unit and her passing will leave a void in all our lives, that at this point seems impossible to fill.

"We cherish the memories of a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister, whose ability to deal with the struggles of life has inspired not only ourselves but an entire nation. The outpouring of grief and good wishes from far and wide are truly appreciated."

Her death notice on RIP.ie stated: "in accordance with Vicky's wishes, a private funeral has taken place". It is understood the funeral took place yesterday, according to RTE.

Ms Phelan passed away in the early hours of Monday morning at Milford Hospice in Limerick at the age of 48 after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2014.

Tonight's Late Late Show will pay special tribute to Vicky. Ryan Tubridy previously paid tribute to her, after she appeared numerous times as a guest on the Late Late sofa.
