The heartbroken family of a Scots man who died after a battle with addiction are 'desperate' to bring his body back home to Dumfries.
Tragic Neil Whannel, 37, died in Glasgow on Monday, April 16, following a long-running battle with addiction issues.
Neil moved to the city as he continued his recovery but sadly passed away suddenly this week, leaving his family utterly devastated, reports Glasgow Live.
The dad had a 13-year-old son and has been described as a 'lovely boy and great soul' by a close family friend who has launched a fundraiser to help get his body returned home to his family.
Delma Egan told Glasgow Live: "Neil had moved to Glasgow because he had got clean and there is a bigger recovery community, he was trying really hard. He had always had periods of recovery.
"He was never down for long, he would always keep trying.
"Sadly there were some unresolved issues he had that would lead to him turning to drugs to cope. His dad passed away last year which hit Neil really hard as they were close.
"He was a gentle soul and a really lovely boy. He had become quite well known in the recovery community so we've already received a lot of donations which is incredible."
Any extra money raised from the fundraiser will be used to support his son.
Delma added: "His sister Emma is just absolutely heartbroken, she thought the world of Neil. The family is just desperate to get him home."
