Family of Scots OAP found dead in crashed car thank searchers as police watchdog launches probe

The family of a missing Scots OAP who was tragically found dead in a crashed car have paid heartfelt thanks to all those that helped look for him. John Winton McNab was last seen on September 16 in Perth before his worried loved ones called the police when he failed to make contact.

The 86-year-old was driving his grey Mercedes B200 vehicle and was thought to have been headed in the direction of Loch Ness or Glen Moriston. But the pensioner’s crashed motor was sadly discovered two days later on the A887 at Invermoriston, near Fort Augustus.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) has been informed with an investigation launched at the instruction of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS).

In a statement formally identifying Mr McNab, his family said: “We would like to thank everyone involved in the search to trace Winton, these efforts are greatly appreciated by the family. We request that our privacy is respected at this sad time.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "A man who died after a car was discovered having been involved in a crash on the A887 at Invermoriston has been formally identified as 86-year-old John Winton McNab, from Perth.

"Mr McNab was the driver of a grey Mercedes B which was discovered around 1.20pm on Sunday, September 18, 2022.

"Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances and anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police can call 101, quoting reference 1660 of September 18, 2022.

"The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) has been instructed by Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to investigate the death of Mr McNab. Its report on the circumstances will be submitted to COPFS at the conclusion of its investigation.

"Police Scotland has also referred the circumstances to the PIRC."
