The family of a much-loved man who died in Glasgow has said they are 'desperate' to his body home to Dumfries.
Neil Whannel tragically died on Monday following a long-running battle with addiction.
The 37-year-old had moved to the city to continue his recovery but sadly passed away suddenly leaving his family devastated.
Neil, who has a 13-year-old son, has been described as a 'lovely boy and great soul' by a close family friend who has launched a fundraiser to have his body returned home.
Delma Egan told Glasgow Live: "Neil had moved to Glasgow because he had got clean and there is a bigger recovery community, he was trying really hard. He had always had periods of recovery.
"He was never down for long, he would always keep trying.
"Sadly there were some unresolved issues he had that would lead to him turning to drugs to cope. His dad passed away last year which hit Neil really hard as they were close.
"He was a gentle soul and a really lovely boy. He had become quite well known in the recovery community so we've already received a lot of donations which is incredible."
As well as paying for Neil's body to be taken back to Dumfries, money from the fundraiser will help pay for his send-off and support his son.
Delma added: "His sister Emma is just absolutely heartbroken, she thought the world of Neil. The family is just desperate to get him home."
