Family of London woman killed on Mount Kenya raise thousands for guide who died trying to save her

The family of a London woman who fell to her death from Mount Kenya have raised tens of thousands of pounds for the family of the "hero" guide who died trying to save her life.

Shilpa Shah, 58, from Harrow in north-west London, was returning from a peak of the mountain with seven other women when she slipped and fell to her death on October 20.

The group's guide, Kelvin Muriuki Mwithi, tragically also plunged to his death while trying to save her from falling.

The family of Ms Shah - an accountant and mother-of-one - have launched a fundraiser to help support Mr Mwithi's young widow and child.

Ms Shah's niece, Neha Shah, told the Standard: "When my aunt slipped, he went after her.

"There was definitely that moment in his mind, when it was 'either I stay up, or I go down to get her'. And unfortunately he also passed away.

"After the initial shock, one of the first things that came out from pretty much everybody's mouth was 'we have to do something to help that poor guy's family', because obviously they're going to be cut off from their main source of income.

"If there's going to be one positive from this happening, it's at least setting that family up for life if possible."

On the Gofundme page, the Shah family said they are "eternally grateful" to Mr Mwithi - "a hero guide who lost his life attempting to save our dear Shilpa".

Mr Mwithi's brother described him as a "true angel who brightened the lives of everyone fortunate enough to have known him".

"His infectious smile, boundless sense of humour, and selfless dedication to his passion for guiding mountaineering expeditions are a testament to the beautiful soul he was," he said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a week into the fundraiser, more than £33,000 had been donated by more than 540 people.

The Shah family hopes to be able to give the money to Mr Mwithi's family in person.

Alexandre L'Heureux said on Gofundme that Mr Mwithi had acted as his group's assistant guide when he climbed Mount Kenya last June.

"Kelvin had such a beautiful, kind soul," he wrote. "And always a big smile on his face. My condolences to his wife, child, and all his friends and loved ones...and to the Shah family. Rest in Peace Kelvin and Shilpa."

Joy Shaw wrote: "Kelvin was a great guy, who was chef on our trip in Feb 2022 - this is so sad - he is such a loss to family and friends - a brave man taken too soon."

Alan Barker said: "Kelvin did not hesitate to go to the help of Shilpa, nor should we to help his family, in whatever way we can. We have lost two beautiful kind souls."

Mount Kenya was the first mountain Ms Shah, a keen hiker, had climbed.

At around 5,200m (17,050ft) in height, it is the second-highest mountain in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Her niece, Neha, told the Standard: "She was the best aunty any girl could possibly have. She was always around, gave the best advice.

"I'm into hiking because of her. She's been a real inspiration to all of us. We're all going to miss her really, really dearly."

A family statement posted online described Ms Shilpa as "a beautiful soul with a radiant smile".

"She gave everything to all without expecting anything in return and will be deeply missed," they said. "She enjoyed the great outdoors and was an inspiration to all her family and friends.

"Shilpa was one of a kind, whose passing will leave an everlasting hole in our lives. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her."
