Family of Father Ted star Brendan Grace give update following cancer diagnosis

Comedian Brendan Grace is keeping his spirits high and his sense of humour in check as he continues his fight against cancer.

It was revealed last week that the 68-year-old Father Ted star had been diagnosed with lung cancer and he is seeking treatment in his native Ireland.

Brendan’s son-in-law, Frankie Gillespie, has given fans an update on the comedian’s condition - and says he is touched by the outpouring of love and support from fans.

The Irish Mirror reports after Frankie spoke to Joe Duffy on RTE Radio One in the morning of Saturday 6 July 2019.

"The amount of cards, phone calls, people enquiring - we're just inundated. Brendan is battling away and he just wanted to let his fans know he loves them all out there, he knows everything that's going on and he's received all the wishes,” Frankie said.

"Brendan loves getting mail in the post. He does his email and stuff like that. I said one time that if he wasn't a comedian, he would be a postman cause he's always mailing something out to people,” he continued.

"From every part of the world, people are calling us and sending us wishes so we just wanted to get back and say a big thank you to everybody,” he said.

"We want to thank all the doctors and nurses that have been looking after him, he's been getting the best of care,” he added.

Frankie added: "He still has the humour and he's making us laugh."

Brendan's Irish July/August tour was cancelled due to the illness, but Frank assured the public that the family are fighting to get the Combine Harvester hitmaker back on the road to entertain his fans.
