Family of Edinburgh mum who died on night out raising cash for her funeral

The niece of an Edinburgh woman who died in a horror crash on the way back from a night out has set up GoFundMe to help support the family.

Suzanne Farrell was coming home from a night out on Friday, May 6 when she was tragically struck by a Vauxhall.

The crash happened outside The Hoppy Bar on Marionville Road in the Meadowbank area of the city. Suzanne was taken to hospital but sadly her daughter was forced to make the decision to switch off the life support machines on Saturday, May 7.

Now Nicky, Suzanne’s niece, has decided to start a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Suzannes’ children, both to help pay for the funeral and to help them grieve.

She says that the situation has completely devastated the family. Suzanne’s grandson, John, was living with Suzanne and has done so all his life. With the loss of his gran and guardian, Nicky says he feels completely lost.

However, neighbours and people in the local community have all reached out to give their condolences, even if they didn’t know Suzzane personally, which Nicky said is making a huge difference.

We spoke to Nicky, who said:

“So, obviously, it was my cousin's mum who it happened to. We found out in the early afternoon of Saturday. My mum found out in the early hours of the morning at about half past six and she told me when I came in from work.

“She told me that Suzanna had tragically been hit by a car on the Friday and that her daughter had to switch the machine off on the Saturday morning. Obviously she found it really hard to switch the machine off so she had to get another family member to help her with that.

“We were all devastated by the news because she was just enjoying a night out. We don’t expect that to happen but obviously my cousin is struggling and I thought Suzanne would give to anyone so if I set up a wee GoFundMe and anything is going to help, I know my cousin would appreciate that.

“They [the family] are totally devastated and broken, the grandson-John- lived with Suzanne for all his life and he basically just feels like he’s on his own. He’s with his aunty just now, Suzanne’s daughter, so we just want to give him a bit of support as well.

“There have been some people reaching out, sending us messages and strangers donating to the GoFundMe and I’m just so grateful for that. A lot of neighbours, we’ve all come together and giving us their condolences and we are just so thankful that people are trying to support the family during this time.”
