Family of Derry man killed in crash in Australia pay tribute to 'adventurous and free-spirited' young man

A Derry man who has been travelling the word for the last 14 years died in a car accident in Australia over the weekend.

It is understood that the tragic crash occurred on Sunday and killed the Bellaghy native and his Singaporean girlfriend.

Christopher Quinn and his partner Kaia were both pronounced dead after the collision and Mr Quinn's family have since spoken out about their devastating loss.

His family described him as a ‘free-spirited and adventurous’ person who left Ireland at the age of 23 for greener pastures.

Since 2008, he has travelled all over the world. He spent a lot of time in Asia where he made a lot of friends and lived each day to the fullest by chasing new experiences.

Christopher's family last night told Derry Now that they were 'devastated' by his passing.

Speaking about the young man, they said: “He was a character, a free spirit, and would give the shirt off his back for anyone.

“Christopher just turned 37 two weeks ago and had left Ireland for Australia 14 years ago like most young ones these days, for a life of sunshine and adventure.

“Although it was hard to keep a track of him at times as he was forever travelling; New Zealand where he also lived for a few years, USA, Thailand, Japan etc.

“Chris was mad about scuba diving, trekking and snowboarding. He also loved going off-grid and chilling by himself plenty but whatever he was doing and wherever he went, he made friends all over the world and everyone would have a story about him”.

Chris’s family is working to have him repatriated back to Ireland for a funeral and McCusker's Funeral directors in Magherafelt will update on that soon.

The family also gave their thanks to The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust who have been very helpful and supportive since the news broke and are helping them get Christopher home safely.

Christopher leaves behind his mum Rosie, his sister Lisa, his four brothers Jodie, Shea, Cahir and Declan and a large Quinn and Doherty family circle.
