Family of boy, 6, who died after Majorca pool tragedy "overwhelmed" by support

The family of a six-year-old boy who died following a swimming pool incident on holiday in Majorca has been “overwhelmed” by community support. Corey Aughey died on Sunday after the tragedy at a hotel in the family resort of Sa Coma on the holiday island.

Friends and loved ones said the boy's devastated family had been touched by massages of support and a fundraising page had been set up on social media. A family member posted on Facebook: “We as a family want to let yous know that king Corey has gained his wings.

"The family couldn't off got through it without all your support, we want to thank you from the bottoms off our hearts for all your kind donations, now we have to concentrate on getting him home. Please keep praying for the family to get the strength to get through the next couple off weeks!!!”

In a brief statement issued on Tuesday evening, Corey’s family begged for privacy as they prepare to bring their son home. Issued via local Belfast councillor Dale Pankhurst, Colin and Leanne Aughey said: “Following the tragic death of our beloved son, Corey Aughey, we have been overwhelmed by the immense support provided by the local community.

"The volume of messages of condolence from right across the community has provided us with some comfort in these extremely difficult circumstances. We would ask that our family are given the time and space to grieve privately following the loss of our beloved son.

"We would also ask that the media refrain from trying to make contact with us as we prepare to bring our son home.”

The Spanish National Police in Majorca has now opened a full investigation into the incident. According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin , emergency crews battled for half an hour at the poolside in a bid to revive the child.

It is reported they managed to resuscitate him, but he later sadly died.
