Family in shock after Co Antrim home destroyed by fire

A Lisburn community is rallying around a young family after their home was badly damaged by a sudden fire.

The blaze broke out on Monday afternoon at a house in Pond Park and quickly took hold.

Luckily, the family were able to escape the home and there were no injuries reported.

Charlene Miller's back garden looks onto the back of the property where the fire broke out and she said it had caused substantial damage.

"We could smell smoke but couldn't see where it was coming from and the next thing my neighbour came out and said she thought the house was on fire," she told Belfast Live.

"We went out into the garden and there was this big bang and the flames just completely went up the whole back of the house, higher than the roof.

"It was literally just within seconds, it was very dramatic."

A fundraising page has been set up to try and help the family and neighbours have offered to help with washing clothes and other practicalities.

The family came into Charlene's home after the frightening incident and she said she tried to do what she could for them.

"The family are just in complete shock, the whole estate was," she said.

"You just feel useless because you don't know what to do for them.

"They've three children, one who's four I think, the middle girl is first year at school and the oldest girl is in third year.

"The wee middle girl, God love her, she was in our house and she had only the one shoe on and she was shouting that her mummy was still in the house.

"And then her mummy came running out of the house, and it was so lucky they got out when they did, because the whole thing went up so quickly and I don't even want to think what could have happened."

The cause of the fire is being treated as accidental and the community is focussed on putting their arm round their neighbours in their time of need.

"I used to be chair of the community organisation up here, so I've been trying to organise a bit of help for the family," Charlene said.

"They've not asked for anything but we want to rally round and try and help them, even just things like doing washes for their clothes and that, any support we can give them.

"We have the fundraising page and we've gone round door to door as well for those who don't really do online banking.

"God love them, the sofas, the TVs, the children's bunk beds and everything have just been completely incinerated."

The NIFRS confirmed it had attended the incident at around 2pm and the blaze was extinguished by 3.40pm.
