Family face €27k hospital bill as Mayo man left with a life-threatening injury after horror crash in Thailand

The family of a Mayo man who received life-threatening injuries after a horror motorcycle crash in Thailand have been hit with an eye-watering €27,000 hospital bill.

Michael was involved in a life-threatening motorcycle accident on his way from Chiang Mai to Pai, in the South-East Asian country.

His family have set up a GoFundMe to help with medical bills and transportation costs, to help Michael get back on his feet and return home to Ireland.

Organiser Alisa Bargeski said: "X-rays and a CT-scan were taken which shows a broken C2 and C6 in his upper vertebrae. He has a broken ankle, and swelling of his left side."

The hospitals financial advisors told the family that procedures will cost €27,500.

So far, the family has raised enough funding to cover the cost of his initial treatment, including first aid care at Pai Hospital, ambulance transfer to Chang Mai, an operation on Michael's throat, CT/X-Ray scans, two days hospitalisation and ankle casts.

However, they still need to cover the remaining costs of his treatment, which will be approximately €21,000.

"This will include the cost of creating and fixing a halo traction brace to stabilise his cervical spinal cord. This is a complex operation that is typically safe, but expensive," they added.

This additional funding will help cover the cost of vests, a two-week hospital stay and an extra three-day stay for an operation.

"We appreciate any support that you can offer to help Michael get the care that he needs right now," Michael's family added.
