A popular family-run Indian restaurant has improved its food hygiene rating from a one to a four, it's been confirmed. Panshee, located in Singleton Street in the city centre, was initially visited by food hygiene inspectors working on behalf of Swansea Council and the Food Standards Agency on February 2, 2023, and given the original low score - but has now been revisited and rescored.
Previously, for the categories, "hygienic food handling", and "cleanliness and condition of facilities and building", the restaurant was given an "improvement necessary" remark. And for the category of "management of food safety" food safety officers reported "major improvement necessary". Overall, the restaurant was given a rating of one, which is the second-lowest possible score.
But, after a re-inspection on April 20, 2023, inspectors found a "high standard of compliance with statutory obligations, and industry codes or recommended practice, with only minor contraventions" and gave them a new overall food hygiene rating of 4, which means 'good'. The re-inspection comes after business owner Miftah Uddin explained that the initial inspection fell at an unfortunate time when he and his family were preoccupied with the poor health of a family member in hospital. Immediately on receiving the earlier low score, he said he and his team set about rectifying all the issues found by inspectors. Mr Uddin also said he made staffing changes to ensure standards would not drop below what customers expected from the restaurant again.
"We'd like to apologise to our customers for letting them down on this occasion. [The rating] was very surprising, very disappointing. I'm angry and I'm sad," Mr Uddin said previously. "At the time of the inspection a family member was very unwell and they actually passed away not long after. I got a call [from my staff] and I came from hospital to be there for the inspection."
Panshee restaurant, which has been running for a decade, serves contemporary Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine. On TripAdvisor Panshee is rated number 19 out of 382 restaurants in Swansea and has a score of 4.5 out of five from 833 reviews.
